Winterizing Your Yacht: A Step-by-Step Guide

Lay your vessel up properly this autumn and she'll be ready to perform next spring

Proper winter layup is one of the best investments you can make in your yacht. Done correctly, it protects every system from cold-weather damage and ensures a smooth commissioning next spring. Here is the complete process.

Engine Winterization

Run a 50/50 antifreeze solution through the raw water cooling system, or drain it completely. Change the engine oil while still warm — old oil contains combustion acids that corrode engine internals over winter. Fog the cylinders with corrosion-inhibiting oil. These three steps prevent the three most common engine problems that emerge after a long winter layup.

Fresh Water System

Drain all tanks, pipes, water heaters, and pumps completely, or treat the entire system with non-toxic RV antifreeze. A frozen pipe can split overnight and silently flood your bilge — a particularly expensive problem to discover in spring.

Deck & Exterior

Remove and store all canvas, covers, and cushions. Coat all stainless steel with lanolin or corrosion inhibitor. Wax the topsides if time allows. Plug all cockpit drains to prevent ingress, then cover the vessel with a breathable winter cover that allows airflow to prevent mould formation below.
