Living Aboard: A Week in the Life of a Modern Liveaboard

We spent seven days living on a 45-foot sailboat in a Croatian marina — here's the honest truth

The liveaboard lifestyle is one of the most romanticised concepts in the boating world — and one of the most honestly misunderstood. We spent a full week living aboard a 45-foot Beneteau Oceanis to find out what it's really like when the Instagram filter comes off.

Morning Aboard: 6:30 AM

The harbour wakes before you do. The click of rigging, the cry of gulls, the smell of diesel and brine, and the gentle roll of a passing ferry wake — it's either deeply romantic or quietly maddening, depending on your state of mind and the quality of your ear plugs.

The Space Challenge

A 45-foot sailboat has roughly 350 square feet of usable interior space. With genuinely creative storage solutions and a minimalist approach to possessions, this is entirely workable for one or two people. It demands constant organisation and a sincere willingness to let go of excess.

"You don't move aboard a boat. You move a curated version of yourself aboard a boat."

What We Loved

The sense of community in a live-aboard marina is remarkable. Within 48 hours, we knew our neighbours by name. Morning coffee in the cockpit watching the sun rise over the hills is an experience no apartment can replicate. And the knowledge that you can — in theory — cast off the lines and go anywhere is a kind of freedom that's difficult to describe.
